What is the Social Web?

The Early Days of the Internet & Web 1.0:

When the Internet first became a household word, the World Wide Web was very one-sided with most websites providing static information. From the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, the Internet remained fairly one-sided with primary offerings including informational & transactional (online shopping) websites.

The Internet Becomes Social with Web 2.0:

The second generation of the Internet came about in the early 2000s & was called Web 2.0 or the social web. No longer were people satisfied being talked at. Instead, they wanted to join the conversation & have a say in the World Wide Web. The evolution of the social web began with user-generated content. Personal websites, forums & online chats became just a few of the standard features of Web 2.0 & made way for blogs, social networking, social bookmarking & more.

Popular Tools of the Social Web:

  • Blogs
  • Social bookmarking: Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, etc.
  • Social networking: MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Groups: Google, Yahoo, etc.
  • File sharing: YouTube, Napster, etc.
  • Wikis: Wikipedia, Google's Knol
  • Virtual worlds: SecondLife
  • Instant messaging
  • Online chat
  • Forums

Blogging & the Social Web:

Blogging is an integral part of the social web. A blog's success relies heavily on its community of readers. That community is typically built through online networking and promotion through the various tools of the social web. Link Building vs. Linkbaiting

Link Building vs. Linkbaiting

To build success blog, we’ve generate incoming links which boost important ratings, such as Alexa Rank, Technorati authority & Google Page Rank. Some bloggers have resorted to using linkbait to generate incoming links. Is linkbaiting a good idea?

Background

As the blogosphere becomes more competitive, bloggers are constantly looking for ways to grow their blogs. One important measure of a blog's success comes from the number of incoming links to it, particularly links from other popular blogs and websites. Search engines such as Google and Technorati use incoming links as a factor in determining how popular a blog is with the thought being, more popular blogs are more authoritative and should be ranked higher in search results.

Rankings on sites such as Google and Technorati affect bloggers in several ways. First, advertisers typically look at those rankings to gauge the popularity of a blog, which affects the amount they're willing to pay to place advertisements on that blog. Second, higher rankings typically equate to more traffic simply because search results often deliver results from higher ranking sites first. With those factors in mind, bloggers pursue many avenues to increase the number of links to their blogs. Some bloggers resort to writing posts deemed as "linkbait". In simplest terms, linkbait posts are those written primarily because they are likely to generate traffic. Typically, linkbait posts are written about hot topics (think Britney Spears), which might have nothing to do with the blog topic. However, the blogger hopes to get a boost in traffic by writing about the linkbait topic. The question many bloggers ask is whether or not linkbaiting is a good idea. The pros and cons of linkbaiting are discussed below to help you make an educated decision before you write a post for linkbait purposes.

Pros

Linkbaiting usually works in terms of driving short term traffic bursts to your blog. A hot buzz topic that people are actively searching for online will undoubtedly drive traffic to your blog. If you're one of the first bloggers to write about a buzz topic before it truly catches fire across the Internet, then you're likely to have a lot of other blogs and websites link to your post as reference. That means a boost in your Google and Technorati rankings thanks to those links. Linkbaiting works in that it drives new visitors to your blog who may not have found it otherwise. The hope is that some of those visitors will turn into loyal readers and return again and again. It also works in terms of getting your name out there across the blogosphere and helping you gain a reputation.

Cons

Linkbaiting drives traffic, but most of that traffic is usually short-lived. The vast majority of people who arrive at your blog through linkbait won't return. However, if the linkbait topic is directly related to the subject of your blog and you have something useful to contribute to the linkbait topic, then you do stand a good chance of driving some conversation on your blog and some repeat traffic. Additionally, linkbait not only brings short-lived traffic, but it also brings the wrong kind of traffic. In other words, the people who arrive on your blog via linkbait might be very different than the audience you want to visit your blog. Linkbait can often bring visitors who don't know you and your blog community and may leave offensive comments or attack your loyal readers.

Outcome

The bottom line about linkbaiting is this - use linkbait with caution and use it for the right reasons. For example, don't write a post about a buzz topic strictly to drive short term traffic unless that topic is related to your blog and you can bring something new and useful to the topic. Don't annoy your loyal readers with linkbait posts that are useless to them. Also, don't annoy new visitors by writing a linkbait post that doesn't deliver information they are likely to be interested in. In other words, your post should still be compelling and relevant even if it's linkbait.

11 Tips for Blog Promotion

You want to grow your blog? Then it's critical that you take many times to promote it. Unfortunately, the old theory, "if you build it, they will come," doesn't apply to blogs. With over 100 million blogs being tracked by blog search engines such as Technorati, publishing compelling content isn't enough to drive awareness & traffic for your blog. Instead, you need to invest in some old-fashioned sweat equity to give your blog a traffic boost. The 11 free blog promotion tips below will help you get started.

1. Comment on Other Blogs

An easy way to give your blog a promotional boost is by commenting on other blogs. Each time you comment, enter the same name & URL in the corresponding fields in the blog comment form. Doing so will help your search engine optimization efforts over time. When you leave relevant, interesting & useful comments on other blogs (particularly those that are related to your own blog's topic), people will notice & follow the link back to your blog to learn more about you & read more of what you have to say.

2. Post Frequently

Posting frequently can boost your search engine traffic. Each new post acts as a new entry point for search engines to find your blogs. Writing with search engine optimization in mind can also boost the potential each of your posts has to lead traffic to your blog.

3. Participate in Online Forums

Join forums related to your blog topic & become an active, contributing member. Include a link to your blog in your forum signature, so it's always available to other members.

4. Use Social Media

Leverage the promotional opportunities that the social web provides. Join social networking sites like Facebook & LinkedIn and include links to your blogs & recent posts in your profiles. Join social bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon & Delicious and submit great content (not just your own). Additionally, consider jumping on the microblogging bandwagon & join Twitter. All of these efforts will increase awareness of your blog & give it added exposure.

5. Link to Other Blogs in Your Own Posts

Try to include links to other blogs in your own blog posts. Refer to other blogs you enjoy reading or specific posts you found particularly interesting. When those other blogs have the trackback feature turned on in their blogging software programs, you'll automatically get a link back to your own blog in the comment section of those posts. At the very least, the other blogger will see the incoming links from your blog in their blog statistic reports, putting you and your blog on his or her radar, and that means more exposure for you.

6. Include Your Blog Link in Your Email Signature & on Business Cards

Basically, include your blog URL everywhere you can. Your email signature & business cards are 2 of the most obvious places to promote your blog with a link or printed URL, but don't be afraid to think out of the box. Promotion is key to success when it comes to blogging. Don't be shy about tooting your own horn!

7. Hold a Blog Contest

Blog contests are a great way to attract new visitors to your blog. The most important thing to remember when using a blog contest as a promotional tool is to get the word out about the contest by announcing it on contest websites.

8. Join a Blog Carnival

Blog carnivals are an easy way to get links to your blog in front of a lot of people. The more closely related to your blog topic that the carnival is, the more traffic you'll get from it.

9. Guest Blog

Offer your services as a guest blogger for other blogs in your niche, particularly ones that get more traffic than yours does. Guest blogging is a great way to get links to your blog & your own thoughts & writing in front of people who are likely to be interested in learning more about you and your blog.

10. Write Multiple Sites & Link Them Together

The more blogs or websites that you write, the more interlinking is possible. That interlinking can be used to promote your blog through different channels that might attract different audiences. Create an integrated blog marketing plan by aligning your promotion efforts across your various blogs & websites to reap the biggest rewards.

11. Submit blog to search engine

By submitting your blog(s) to search engine, you will get more traffic form here. Many blogger promote their blogs for first time in search engine. As they think, search engine is a great place to get traffic because people search something in search engine. Read Submit Blog to Search Engines for more information.
